This time of year, everything is in full bloom, and I love to bring a little bit of the outdoors inside. ( I'm talking flowers and herbs, not creepy crawlies.) Because of our abundance of herbs we have growing this year, I'm trying to get creative with different ways to make use of them. Apparently you are not supposed to let them go to flower, which is near impossible for me because they are so rampant. I can hardly get them cut before they start flowering again! I was looking at them last night, and I thought to myself how pretty the little flowers are on top of my mint and basil. Why not make use of the flowers, too? So this morning I decided to go out and make myself some pretty little flower arrangements using flowers growing in our yard and herbs. And added bonus: they smell HEAVENLY!
This is what I chose as far as herbs. When doing an arrangement, I like to have lots of different heights, thicknesses, textures, and colors. Kind of like an art project. I'm always looking for balance, (I am a Libra.)
These are a couple different kinds of roses, some are climbing, some are knock out roses, and some are just beautiful, regular roses. A good tip when doing an arrangement is to be sure to remove any foliage that will be below the water line. Its it more likely to mold and your arrangement will not last as long.
These are some lilies that were here when we moved in as well as some spirea, I love the texture in both of these cuttings!
I also cut a little off of my coleus plant, because the color just jumps out at you! And its ginormous, so It won't be missing these few leaves I cut off. So, now....get to it! Just mess around and keep trying things until you get it to look the way you want it. I like taller cuttings in the back, with fuller shorter cuttings working my way towards the front. Then I go back and fill in with spikies and thicker foliage. And, yes, spikies is a technical term. (No, its not.) Play with color, think of unexpected combinations, and no matter what, the green will always tie it together. Here's what I came up with after playing around with it for a while:
I decided to make two and use my shorter roses and baby basil flowers in a little vase I made out of an old spaghetti sauce jar. Of course, I covered it in Mod Podge and Martha Stewart glitter. You do know who is writing this, right? The glitter queen. I leaves trails of glitter wherever I go. Its really a problem.
I wanted to show you a close up of the herbs, they add such a nice touch! Here is the lettuce leaf basil:
This is the chamomile and more lettuce leaf basil:
Some pretty purplish mint flowers:
And the baby basil in the smaller arrangement:
You can see why I did my arranging outside. It looks like a flower girl didn't do her job and dropped all the petals in one place. I may or may not have done that in real life at one period in time. Let me know if you try this, I'd love to see some homemade herbal flower arrangement pictures!!
